Camp Councilors’ Seminar

On October 26-28, 2012  Armenian National Union of YMCAs organized a Camp Councilors’ Seminar  in Vanadzor YMCA Aramyan Campsite in which 22 young people– representatives of all Armenian local organizations and the National  Union took part.  The main goal of the seminar was to discuss the 2012 camping season, to highlight all the achievements and discuss all the failures. Issues such the National camping committee activity, cooperation  among the local organizations camping programs and camp leaders, YMCA Armenia Camping program future development and branding were included on the agenda.

A Frost Valley YMCA (Clariville, NYC) Camp Director Kam Kobeissi was invited to join the seminar. He shared the rich experience of Frost Valley YMCA camping program with the young leaders  covering quite a wide range of topics: prolong the camping season, summer camps, work with parents, how to keep the campers and their parents engaged with the organization during the whole year, documentation packages for each camper, code of conduct, etc. Besides, he answered all the questions the young leaders were interested in.

It is worth mentioing again that during the past 2 years due to the support of Frost Valley YMCA ANU Y had a chance to send  leaders (Grisha Bostanchyan from Spitak YMCA in 2011 and Ani Sindoyan from Vanadzor YMCA in 2012) to Frost Valley YMCA camp to work during the whole summer camp season which is a really valuable experience for the leaders themselves as well as for both their local organizations and for the ANU Y Camping program. Grisha and Ani spoke about their experience in the USA too. The cooperation between YMCA Armenia and Frost Valley YMCA will continue in 2013 too.

Summer Camp in the Result of World Vision-YMCA Cooperation

280 school students’ committee member kids from different regions of Armenia (Yerevan, Aparan, Alaverdi, Talin, Kapan, Sisian) participated in 7 shifts in the Summer Camp held in Vanadzor YMCA Aramyan Campsite on July 6-August 31. World Vision works with these kids during the whole year to develop active civic participation. They are considered future leaders for their community development projects and for their promotion. The cooperation is based on the fact that YMCA is working with children and through the TenSing program in particular gives them the opportunity to self-express, to develop self-confidence which is very important for the projects to be initiated by the young people. The organizers, the parents and even the participants themselves are quite satisfied with the program course and they all mention that certain changes in the children are obvious: they started to express themselves freely, to discuss new ideas openly, and to display critical approach.

In general, it can be stated the Summer Camp 2012 was a good start for the World Vision-YMCA cooperation. World Vision is interested in collaboration further continuation. Of course, there are issues that need to be corrected or improved and they are openly discussed between the parts involved. Perhaps the future camps will have 2 main directions: a TenSing Camp where active children who do well at school will be involved to develop leadership skills and a Summer school that will be the continuation of the work World Vision is implementing during the whole year and the sum-up phase where they will get more theoretical knowledge on leadership.
